THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is the largest global partnership agreement and development plan for the planet ever made. It was agreed upon by all UN member state in September 2015 and consists of 17 goals and 169 targets. The goals ultimately aspire to create a better, more inclusive and more prosperous world by 2030. To make this happen, we need to identify new solutions, create partnerships and unleash the vast potential of young, innovative minds.
By using the innovative mindset of young people and partnering talents with leading companies, research institutions, foundations, non-profits, and developmental partners; mentorship and volunteerism provides the next generation with capacity in contributing to sustainable development.
Harnessing the next generation of ethical leaders will be critical if achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals is to be possible – they bring fresh perspectives, open minds, different values, tech savviness, and an appetite for disruption; mentorship and volunteerism is a catalyst in reaching these end.
Africa’s Future presents a unique platform for all stakeholders in Mentorship & Volunteerism to provide an overview of leading programs, projects, policy, research and technology capable of securing sustainable development on the continent.
This platform seeks to build bridges among service leaders from government, the private sector, developmental partners and NGOs, and to foster an information exchange on increasing the role of citizens within member states in problem solving towards sustainable development.
This summit aims to serve as a platform to facilitate knowledge sharing, and transfer and help stakeholders leverage on both local and international expertise in the attainment of sustainable development.
This award is in two folds:
The International Mentorship and Volunteerism Awards is an award calling on businesses of all sizes to allow their employees to mentor for short periods during the work day, giving children positive role models, equipping startups, NGOs and social enterprises with requisite knowledge and expertise and offering employees a way to give back to society.
The private sector is uniquely positioned to make an impact through mentoring in the communities where they are located. Companies not only have financial resources to invest in quality programs, but also a pool of adults who can model positive attitudes, intellectual curiosity, compassion for others and the determination to succeed – characteristics young people need in order to achieve success. In return for these investments, businesses see increased employee productivity, improved morale and retention, and positive community relations.
